      Proposed Basic British Sign Language Course



This course is for the purpose of learning British Sign Language (B.S.L.) in order to communicate effectively with the Deaf people in a social, domestic and working environment. This course is not nationally recognised by the Learning Skills Council as well as the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation.


Should one wish to learn British Sign Language with the aim of obtaining Professional qualifications in order to gain employment as Communication Support, Interpreters etc then there are a number of courses offering a number of levels which is recognised by both Signature and Institute of British Sign Language.


On the successful conclusion of the course each student will be awarded a certificate showing that one has acquired the basic BSL skills needed for non-professional communication with the Deaf.


Course Content :


There will be 3 blocks of learning and each of these blocks will cover a specific learning programme, each lasting 20 hours which will consist of 66% teaching and 33% group work. Each learning block will be on the basis of 2 hours per week over 10 weeks. At the end of each learning block, you will be assessed.


  1. Learning Block No. 1 – Understand basic information in B.S.L.

  2. Learning Block No. 2 - Develop strategies to acquire simple and basic British Sign Language

  3. Learning Block No. 3 - Take part in and follow simple conversations in British Sign Language


Cost of Course :


The cost include teaching material, assessment and certification and it will be at £250 per student. A minimum of 10 students are required. There could be payment options such as monthly or block payments.
